About the Euro

The name "Euro" was officially adopted on December 16, 1995, but the currency was not introduced to world financial markets until 1999, replacing the former European Currency Unit (ECU). The idea of a single currency within the EEC was born in the 1970s, but it wasn't until the 1992 Maastricht Treaty that it passed from theory to law. The treaty was concluded by twelve countries that were then part of the European Economic Community.

The euro is the official currency of 19 of the 28 European countries that make up the so-called "euro area" and are part of the European Union. They are: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta and Portugal. Outside the EU, the currency is also used elsewhere. They are: Andorra, Monaco and Vatican. The euro is the second most traded currency in the world after the dollar.

According to ISO 4217, the currency code is "EUR". One euro equals 100 cents. The banknotes (5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500) have one face in common and another, depending on the country in which they were minted.

How we get quotes

The values are obtained through the API of the Central Bank of Brazil, which provides the opening quotation of the day from 10:00 am, and after that intermediate values are available at 11:00 am, 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm. After 1 pm, the BCB closes with the PTAX quotation, which is the arithmetic average of all the rates of the day, as it is a reference value and is not used in Convertpedia.
