Online Calculators

What is a calculator?

A calculator is a small electronic device that performs mathematical calculations. It is used by students, financial advisors, accountants and many others when mental math does not produce a quick and accurate answer.

A calculator is a device that performs arithmetic operations on numbers. Basic calculators can only do mathematical calculations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

However, more sophisticated calculators can handle exponential operations, square roots, logarithms, trigonometric functions, and hyperbolic functions. Internally, some calculators perform all of these functions through repeated addition processes.

Creation of Calculators

The first calculator was invented around 1642 by Blaise Pascal, a French mathematician and philosopher. This innovative device was called the “Pascaline” and it came out right around the time of the Industrial Revolution when big changes were taking place in business and technology.

Although the Pascaline was technically the first adding machine to exist, the portable electronic calculator took things to the next level! The most famous is the iconic Texas Instruments (TI) calculator, invented by Jerry Merryman and Jack Kilby in 1967.
